Class
Description:

Staying current and knowing what Internet search tool to use and when is a daunting task. With simple modes versus advanced modes, natural language searching versus Boolean logic, relevancy ranking, backlinking, folders, directories, and more, what we know and use today may not be recognizable tomorrow.

Develop the critical skills and strategies necessary for mastering Internet searching and basic Web creation and design in a workshop setting. Learn simple and advanced techniques for finding and evaluating materials on the Internet. Then learn to create a Web site using Dreamweaver that incorporates the information you find online. Learn in a "hands-on" environment at University Library's Electronic Classroom where you will discover as you learn.

Course
Objectives:

Internet Research and Web Design will focus on the Internet as a research resource and to develop a broader understanding of the World Wide Web. We will examine the search tools in detail, develop and refine search strategies and techniques, and learn to evaluate information found on the web.
  • Participants will create a research project of their own and are expected to maintain personal list of resources that outlines the plan and the process of how you found and evaluated information.
  • Participant will create a basic Web page using Dreamweaver that illustrates the research project. The Web page will be the culminating project in the class and will demonstrate the student's ability to research a topic on the Internet and the ability to critically evaluate "good" content sites.
  • Participants will construct and maintain an online log on the Blackboard Threaded Discussion charting the progress of their research project. A minimum of three progress reports are required and due before every Monday's class period.
  • Participants will give a 5 - 10 minute presention to the class on their research project.
  • Particpants will participate in online discussions using Blackboard Courseware.
  • Participants will learn the basics of working with browsers--Netscape and Internet Explorer.
  • All readings and supplementary material will be provided online as a part of the course.
  • Attendance in mandatory and will count toward 25% of your grade.
  • An email account and access to the Internet is required as well as the basic knowledge of using a mouse and a PC computer. Some familiarity with the Internet is preferred, but not necessary.
