A passing grade (C- or better) in Ch 202 is a prerequisite for Ch 203. If you recieved a grade of D or below in Ch 202, you may not take Ch 203 until you have passed Ch 202.
Please note that a grade of C- or better in Ch 203 is required in order for you to enroll in organic chemistry (Ch 331 or Ch 334) next fall!
Class attendance and participation are expected, although roll will not be taken. Grades will be based upon the total number of points obtained. There will be two midterm exams worth 100 points each, and a comprehensive final exam worth 200 points. Weekly homework problems will be counted at one point per problem. Homework sets are due at 5:00 p.m. on the Mondays listed on the homework schedule. Late assignments will not be accepted. You are encouraged to work in groups as large as four on the homework, but you are asked to be sure that all members of a group participate in and learn from the homework.
For each class session, there will be a set of lecture notes, assigned reading, and a problem assignment. The assigned reading and the applicable homework problems are listed on the Lecture and Homework Page. Before coming to class, you should do the reading assignment and look over the lecture notes and problems. This will insure that class time is beneficial to you. Applicable homework problems should be attempted the day the material is discussed in class, and certainly no later than the next day. This allows you to get help on material which troubles you while it is still fresh in your mind. Please do not wait until the weekend before the homework is due to sit down and do it! You will find that if you work a few problems each day during the week not only will you will get more from the lecture sessions, but you also will have less to do to prepare for exams. When you are solving the homework problems, keep your lecture notes nearby - we work many of the homework problems in class and these problems are meant to serve as study guides for you.
The homework problems on the Lecture and Homework Page will be linked to the solutions on the web the day after each homework assignment is due. For this reason, late homework assignments will not be accepted. The solutions will be left linked until you are tested on the material. If you get stuck on a homework problem, please come in for help!
Please hold on to your homework after it is graded and returned to you! Very rarely an assignment is graded but not recorded, and in case of a dispute about whether or not an assignment was recorded, I will only accept the original assignment with either my or my grader's marks on it. Check in with me occasionally and we'll take a look and see if you're up to date on the homework.
There will be a weekly help session (Ch 197) in Sc 275 each Friday from 2:00-2:50. You are strongly encouraged to enroll for this course. If you received a D+ grade in Ch 203, you will be required to attend Ch 197 if you wish to remain enrolled in Ch 203.
The Ch 203 Final Exam is the American Chemical Society Standardized Exam in General Chemistry. The exam covers material from Ch 201/2 as well as Ch 203. Study guides from the ACS Division of Chemical Education will be available.
