Content: We will cover chapters 3-8 and 10 of Noggle's text this quarter. Homework assignments will be taken from the Noggle and Barrante texts and from in-class handouts.
Format: There will be three 50-minute lectures weekly, in addition to a voluntary help session. We will have a two midterm exams, weekly homework/Mathcad assignments, and a comprehensive final examination.
Your performance in this course will be a direct reflection of two factors: (1) the amount of time spent on the assigned homework, and (2) the amount of time and effort spent in reviewing and keeping current with the lecture material. Homework problems and their due dates will be listed on the Ch 442 Homework Page; I will make every effort ensure that the homework assignments cover current relevant lecture material, and often I will give hints/examples for homework problems during lecture. For this reason, it is essential that, as soon as a topic is covered in lecture, you attempt to solve any similar homework problems. Also, for this same reason, LATE HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. Further, I will not answer questions about an assignment on the same day it is due. You will always be given at least one workweek to complete an assignment, and there is no reason for you to wait until the last minute to work the assigned problems.
If a problem or concept troubles you, please see me as soon as possible for clarification. It will also be to your advantage to get into the habit of re-deriving your lecture notes within about 24 hours of a lecture, while the lecture is still reasonably fresh in your mind. Merely reading the text and looking over your notes is not sufficient - get out a pencil and paper and go through the derivations! You cannot learn physical chemistry by watching me do derivations and problems on the board - you must go through the material yourself! If a portion of a derivation or a mathematical technique troubles you, please come in for help.
