Our laboratory is scheduled for Tuesdays, 2:00-4:50 p.m. Students may also work in the lab at any time between 1:00 and 5:00 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays with permission of the instructor. You may not work in the lab alone. You are encouraged to work on experiments in groups of two or three, provided that all work is divided equitably. A sign-up sheet will be posted outside the lab for your use.

Experiments

Due Dates

We will do the first five experiments listed above, in order. Reports are due on the dates specified above. Students will be penalized 10 points per week for late assignments, with no exceptions.

Lab reports

Due to the large amount of data reduction and analysis involved in Ch 445, reports this quarter will consist primarily of detailed Mathcad worksheets. The usual Intro/Methods/Results sections are not neccesary but text sufficient to guide me through your calculations and results is required. A grade of F will be given to any student who has not completed all reports satisfactorily by 6/13.

The laboratory notebook

• Must be kept in ink
• Must be brought to lab each day and to be used as the first place where data and observations are recorded
• Not necessarily to be kept neat and clean but certainly to be legible
• Not to contain erasures of any sort
• All pages to be numbered and dated
• Must contain a table of contents
• Must contain a clear indication of where each experiment begins and ends

Academic Dishonety Policy

Because originality of thought and integrity of scientific data are central to the scientific enterprise, the SOU Chemistry Department has a zero-tolerance policy towards academic dishonesty in any form. Acts of academic dishonesty include but are not limited to: plagiarism, deliberate falsification of scientific data, submitting or enabling the submission of identical lab reports or portions thereof, bringing unauthorized materials to examinations, looking at another student's work during an exam, or otherwise obtaining grades under false pretenses. Academic dishonesty will be addressed in accordance with the Academic Standards policy at SOU (http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/rules/OARS_500/OAR_573/573_095.html). All cases of academic dishonesty will be forwarded to the office of the Dean of Students for further review. The institution reserves the right to impose further sanctions in accordance with the SOU Student Code of Conduct (http://arcweb.sos.state.or.us/rules/OARS_500/OAR_573/573_075.html). Such sanctions may include suspension or expulsion from the institution depending on the severity and frequency of the offense.
