Dear Word Doctor,

When do you properly use hanged or hung?

Well, it used to be that you could use these words interchangeably, but, like so many other things, our ancestors messed it up somewhere along the way. Today, people are hanged, while inanimate objects are hung. So if you can get by without a rioting mob and noose, it’s hung.
