Who We Are What We Do

Open Submissions

(Now accepting)

Here at Cognito, our main goal is to see your work published: whether it's that all important first publication, or just a way to ensure that someone other than yourself reads your story.  With this goal in mind, we have completely revamped our open submission policy and guidelines.

Open submissions are no longer limited to SOU students only.  Poems, prose, and non-fiction essays are all welcomed from all people who need an outlet for their writing.

Also, we have created a new, ongoing way to reward your creative endeavors.  The Editor's Choice Award will now be given to any work the editor of Cognito considers to be of superior quality.  The number of awards we give out depends on the number excellent works we receive.  It is you, the writers, who set the limit.

There will also be prizes for the Editor's Choice Award.  However, since we do not know when we will receive a worthy piece of work, the prizes will vary.  Could be a gift certificate one week, a signed book the next.  Who knows?

Rules For Submission:
1) Submit all works to cognito@sou.edu (attachments please).
2) All stories in either Real Text Format or Microsoft Word.
3) All e-mails must be titled Open Submission.
4) All e-mails must include a brief paragraph with your name, e-mail address, and best way to get a hold of you.

For Fiction and Non-fiction:
1) No word count limit (2,500-5,000 words ideal though).
2) Double-spaced with a 12-point font.  Nothing fancy.
3) All genres of fiction accepted.
4) Please send us stories that are well written and have captivating characters.

Rules For Submitting Poetry:
1) Submit up to three poems at a time.
