Who We Are What We Do

Caliente

I saw
a cross of tin
and a cow jaw
painted fire-red with
            Caliente!
burned across the bone
and a price tag of $12.95
tied around a decayed tooth.
It was salvaged coke cans crafted
into crosses by crafty hands
            disgraced,
scavenging sacred desert floors
like full-bellied coyotes emptying hell,
slavering over innocent bones,
paintbrushes dripping with blood
            that are teeth.
