General Biology
biology sequence for non-biology majors

Bio/political and bio/social issues are becoming commonplace. Genetic engineering, sociobiology, food shortages, the use of pesticides and herbicides and water and air pollution are examples of issues which involve significant moral, ethical, economic and political questions. The faculty of the Biology Department believe that intelligent participation in the solving of such issues requires a basic educational preparation in the area of biology.
To this end, the Biology 101,102,103 sequence has been designed to:
1. EXPLAIN FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES OF LIVING PROCESSES and relate these to your life.
2. DEVELOP YOUR CRITICAL AND REFLECTIVE THINKING SKILLS through discussion of research and consideration of ethical problems.
3. GIVE YOU A GREATER APPRECIATION OF THE LIVING WORLD through the study of its beauty, diversity, intricacies, and interrelationships.
Our challenge to you is to integrate and relate the various areas of specialized knowledge and ways of thinking which you will learn during this class into your own life as a step in the direction of becoming a truly educated person.
